Internet Security?

After Dr. Gates came to talk to us during class, one thing became very apparent: internet security doesn’t exist. Real surprise there. Who would have guessed that? Most people know that the internet has become a very unforgiving place. Once something is posted, uploaded or sent it basically becomes everyone’s business. There’s really no way to permanently get rid of something online once it’s there. A person can always delete the original post, but there’s no way to know if a second party shared that same content. There is no guaranteed way to cover your tracks.

On another level, the content a person a shares isn’t the only thing that can become public knowledge. A person’s search history is also not completely safe. Even though people can ‘clear’ their browser history, companies and websites can still track what a person is viewing. This results in advertising directed at a person’s interests and history. With my area of study, this comes as an interesting development in the advertising industry to me. On one hand, ads become more directed at the people in specific target markets – however at the same time is violates a person’s privacy.
